The Custom Design section, which allows you to change the fonts, apply a custom color scheme, and edit the CSS, is only available with a paid upgrade. The Site Title & Tagline are where your website name and institutional motto or tagline go, and they will appear in the header (or other theme-determined location) on every page of your site. Colors & Backgrounds play a major part in the customization of your site. For the background, you can upload an image, choose a preset color, or pick your own color. The first color swatch (possibly white) in this section is the background. Hover over it and click on Change. To upload your own background image,2 click on Select Image and upload your image. Note that JPEGs, PNGs, and GIFs are the only image-file types accepted. When you upload an image, you can edit its title, caption, alt text, and description (all of which are important for SEO, as discussed in Chapter 2). Once you have edited this information, click Select. When you return to the Customizer, click on Options underneath the background image you just uploaded. From here, you can change the alignment, repetition, position, and underlying color of the image. When you are finished, click Done. To choose a color palette, click on one of the Featured Palettes your theme offers. The header can be adjusted in two ways: by changing the site title and tagline, as above, or by uploading a header image, such as a photograph, logo, or text saved as an image. In the Header Image section, your theme will tell you what the optimal header image size is (e.g., 1260 × 240 pixels) though you can always crop the image after uploading it.
